Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA) integrates various art modalities (visual arts, movement, poetry, music, drama etc.) into the therapy session as it is relevant to the client and his or her specific needs. EXA is grounded in the capacity of the arts to respond to the whole range of human experience.
By engaging in art processes in the therapy, the expressive arts therapist helps the client to articulate his or her life concerns by building a bridge between the inner life of images and sensations and the world of words. EXA can provide ways to work with and transform the multi-sensory images that comprise our psychological experience.
In addition EXA can enrich the practice of family, couples and group therapy by providing a powerful tool for deepening communication and empathy. For more information please visit www.ieata.org.
